The population of Kilkenny has passed the 100,000 mark for the first time in over 150 years. Kilkenny housing stock has increased since 2016 by 5.2 per cent to 41,279 homes in 2022. There were 929 homes sold in Kilkenny in 2022, totalling €264 million, compared to 963 in 2021 at €238 million. In 2022, 326 of the sales were in the €250,000 – €500,000 price range; 516 were under €250,000. There were only 194 new estate housesand 27 apartments built in Kilkenny in 2022 leaving a significant shortage of homes for sale and rental. Four of the homes which sold in Kilkenny in 2022 for over €500,000 were in Mount Juliet. Two of the six properties that sold in Kilkenny in 2021 for over €1 million were in Mount Juliet.
